The Texas Kiteboarding Association was formed by kiters and for kiters. In recent years, the Texas kiteboarding community has lost some great launch spots in Corpus Christi and South Padre Island. We recognized that without a unified voice advocating for public launches and protecting water access, the kite and wing community could continue to loose launches and potentially be restricted from current riding areas. In order to reverse this trend, we formed this association to work with the cities and public authorities in Texas to support and expand access for kiteboarding and winging.
WHAT WE WILL NOT DO? We will not attempt to restrict or ban any individual or organization from utilizing water access to enjoy kite or wing activities. Will will not attempt to impose rules or regulations upon kite and wing riders.
In the Corpus Christi area, the kiteboarding community has lost sveral good flat- water launches in the state (Stark Seminary College at Oso Bay, Rockport Beach and ski basin and Bird Island Basin). Mosy of the remaining launch areas for the prevailing SE winds are on private land on which we are trespassing and can be shut down at any time.
We have met one-on-one with several members of the city council as well as the state representative for the Coastal Bend and have won their support. Additional conversations are ongoing and we believe that, with an organized effort, we can reach a majority of city council members who support public kiteboarding launches at Oso Bay and/or the Laguna Madre shoreline.
Securing the Oso Bay Launch - Through our efforts working with Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation, Texas A&M (who owns that parcel of land) has given us permission to continue using it as a public launch. While this may seem insignificant since we were already using it, this means we are no longer trespassing and, barring a catastrophic event, access to Oso Bay is secure. Our launch there is now above board with the blessing of both the Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation and Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi.
We are continuing to work with the city to get a 20 mph zone on Ocean Drive next to the launch to make the area safer for both kiters and drivers on the road.
Additionally, we have gained media attention for our cause and secured the support of the Surfrider Foundation which is a national and well respected organization committed to protecting beaches and public water access. The Corpus Christi parks and recreation department is currently exploring several potential launch spots we have proposed to them.
We believe we are close to succeeding and the work we’ve done in Corpus Christi can be replicated elsewhere in Texas. Corpus Christi is just the test bed for securing water access for kite and wing launches statewide.
